The mobile phone industry is very technologically progressive. Mobile phones can send messages, take pictures, play music and can be used to surf the internet and send emails. However, when it comes to calling abroad, the mobile phone industry seems to be a little less progressive. Calls abroad from a mobile phone in the UK aren’t exactly what you’d call cheap. Some networks charge £1 a minute for calling abroad to Europe and a massive £1.50 for the rest of the world, making a five minute call to friends in the southern hemisphere a whopping £7.50.

But now there is another way to make calls abroad. With a Lebara SIM card you can call the world from as little as 4p per minute. Say you need to make international calls on a regular basis maybe because you have friends and relatives living overseas, you can get a Lebara SIM card, pop it in your existing handset, put some credit on it and away you go.

You can make calls to Pakistan for 9p per minute to both landlines and mobiles; calls to India are even less, 5p to landlines and 7p to mobiles. If you have family Down Under you’ll be pleased to hear that calls to Australia are a tiny 4p to landlines and 15p to mobiles and good news for the Polish nationals living and working in the UK, as calls to Poland are just 4p to landlines and 9p to mobiles.

Why hadn’t anyone thought of this earlier? Who knows, but the mobile phone industry recognised this pioneering, simple yet effective international phone calls service by honouring Lebara Mobile with two Mobile News Awards for the UK’s Most Innovative Service in March 2009 and the Best MVNO in March 2010.
